Want to save changes to a document????

I have the Word program that comes if Office XP. When I open a word
document and then try to close it without making any changes I am asked if I
want to keep the changes to the document. What is this about?

Doug-
I created two new word documents today in the same file. They are
essentially the same document with different names. When I close one I am
prompted to save the changes when there are none. On the other document I
am not prompted.
