Want to save doc as template and replace existing template

I have created 2 documents in which I have created an
AutoNew macro. (The macro just prompts me to fill in
fields to complete the Header informaton in all sections
of both documents.) After recording the macros I saved
the documents. Then I saved the docs as templates.

Now when I want to make changes to the template, I just
want to open the doc, make my revisions to format, etc.,
then save first as a doc, then using Save As, save it as
a template again.

On the one document it works as I'd intended, it
says "the template already exists, do you want to
replace?" to which I say yes.

My problem is that on the other doc, when I try to save
as a template, I get the error message "Word cannot give
a document the same name as an open document" and wants
me to give a different name.

As far as I can recall, when I created the macros in both
these docs, I indicated that the macro should be
available in the .doc.

The only thing I can see that is different between the
two documents is that on the one that works (allows me to
replace the current template when prompted) is that if I
look in Tools, Macro, Macros dialogue box, and look at
the dropdown "Macros in", I see the current document name
only. In the one that doesn't work (insists I rename it
before saving as a template), I see the document name, as
well as the template name. How do I make this document
the same as the one that shows only the doc name in
the "macros in" dropdown. I must have done something
differently when I created the two docs, but have no idea
what. I've even tried deleting the AutoNew macro and
rerecording it and saving the doc, then resaving as a
template. But the next time I try to save the doc I
still get the same error message asking me to rename.

I don't want to have to go to the template directory to
delete the old template, each time I have a minor change
to the document. Any suggestions?

Hi Fran

Open the template rather then creating new document based on the template.
Then make your changes and save the template.
