Want to set outlook 2003 to wait until connected to internet beforesending/receiving e-mail

I just reinstalled outlook 2003 to a Windows XP machine.
Outlook trys to a send/receive action as soon as I take my laptop out
of standby, before I am connected to the internet. I get an annoying
send/receive progress popup.
Can I set outlook to wait until I connect before trying to connect?
I have the box checkmarked that says " send immedietdly when
connected"
