wanting to go with 64 bit

Here's my thing. My outlook has contacts; and everytime I install a 64 bit
version of windows, I can never copy my old pst file from my d drive back to
the proper place on the c drive and get all of my older folders and contacts
back. I assume it's because it is not compatible with a 64 bit system (I
don't know why. Microsoft says it has not created a 64 bit version of office.
So, if that's 32 bit, I don't know why it won't read my 32 bit contact.pst
file). Also, every time I export contacts; it doesn't export the email
addresses. Is there some program that I can export my email folders to, and
all of my contacts. Windows mail now has the one feature I couldn't live
without. So, I am actually contemplating on not using outlook anymore.
(one less headache I'd have to worry about.)

There is no 'proper place' for the outlook data file, there is a default
location
There are Vista permission issues in copying data to the default outlook
data location
There are no compatibility issues between data files and 64 /32bit
Within outlook you simply open the data file, wherever it is located on your
PC
If you get err msg, eg not an outlook data file, then that usually means
that the method you used to create that data file was at fault
What are you trying to export contacts to and why?

After I installed vista and copied my outlook pst file from my d drive ( I
have a complete copy of my data files from an earlier instalation of vista).
I can't recall the entire path at the moment, but, it starts in the app data
folder. I think it's something like d:/user/bob/app
data/outlook/contacts.pst. So after getting vista 64 bit, I had to reformatt
my hard drive to get ready to go with the 64 bit version of vista, then after
reinstalling the entire office package; I copied the outlook pst file from
the proper location on my d drive to the same location on my c drive. Didn't
work, so, I went back to the 32 bit version. After all the copying was done;
it worked. Then after windows 7 rc 1 was availiable. After alot of fuss, I
decided the heck with vista, and just did a clean install of windows 7 RC 1
(64 bit) same problem.

There is no *proper* location only a default location
It would be unusual to have a data file named contacts.pst, unless you
perhaps exported your contacts to a pst so named.
Copying data files to the default Vista location can result in Vista
permissions issues, and in any case if you overwrote the origonal pst,
created when you first configured outlook you will likely have corrupted
both the pst and the Profile
Copy the old pst to your Documents folder, then open it within outlook
If you get any err msg, regarding this pst, then either the read only flag
is set, or your method of creating / moving this pst was at fault
