I installed a new harddrive in my computer and reintalled word 2003. Since
then I am missing the pdf converter tab in word. I use to be able to convert
word documents to pdf before I my old hard drive crashed. I have office 2003
home edition and adobe reader currently. I "upgrated" the adobe reader to
the newest version. I was able to convert before from word and I dont know
what happenend during the installation on my new hard drive to not have that
function anymore.

Word 2003 does not and never did have the ability to create PDF files by
itself. That's a new feature in Word 2007. The Adobe Reader also doesn't
have the ability to create PDF files, only to read them.

At some point you must have installed another program that hooked into Word
and gave it the ability to save/print to PDF. There are many, including
PrimoPDF (www.primopdf.com), CutePDF (www.cutepdf.com), and PDF995
(www.pdf995.com). Whatever it was, download it again and install it.

The problem is I have no recollection of ever installing a seperate converter
in to word. I prefer not to download from a 3rd party that is not proven safe
for my word program. If I find a third party prf converter what would the
wording be to ensure that it is safe.

I have no idea what you would consider "safe". However, I've never heard of
anyone claiming that any of these programs caused any damage.

All of the three I cited work by pretending to be a printer. You tell Word
(in the Print dialog) to "print" to the PDF program, which then creates a
PDF file instead of a paper copy.

All three are free for personal use. PrimoPDF is a bit simpler to install
than the other two because it doesn't require a separate PostScript-to-PDF
converter.

If you don't want to install anything on your computer, and you need PDF
output only occasionally, you can use a Web-based version. For example, look
at http://online.primopdf.com or http://www.pdfonline.com.
