Regarding the solution, I think I didn't understand completely your
solution. Can you be more precise?

Create a new sorting and grouping section with a header. Make sure the
section is based on a unique/primary key value. This will create a new
detail section. Make this section exactly the same height as your detail
section. Place the graphic in this section and use code similar to the code
in the sample/demo.
