watermark in Word 97

I would like to create a watermark in Word 97. The first 2 sentences in
Help confused me. They seem to be contradicting each other.

To print a watermark, you must insert it into a header or footer. The
watermark is printed wherever you place it on the page-it doesn't have to be
confined to the area at the top or bottom of the page.

Not sure yet whether i'll be using text or a graphic for the watermark.
(This is for my daughter in grade 7, she has to do this this afternoon
aftere school, I wanted to be prepared to help her.)

Hi, Lisa,

When you insert a floating graphic (that includes pictures, textboxes, and
WordArt), the object is "anchored" in the paragraph that currently contains
the cursor. If you go into Tools > Options > View and check the box for
"Object anchors", then you can actually see an anchor symbol in the left
margin next to that paragraph whenever the object is selected. In order to
have the object repeat on every page, the anchor has to be in the header or
footer -- that is, the cursor has to be in the header/footer at the time you
do the insertion.

Regardless of where the anchor is, the object itself can be dragged around
and placed anywhere on the page.

If you insert the picture in-line, you have to convert it to floating (use
the Text Wrapping button on the Picture toolbar to make the wrapping Square
or Tight) before you can drag it.

They aren't really contradictory. Perhaps they seem so if you think that a
header or footer must be just a single line of text, but it can be more than
that and it can be a picture and it doesn't have to be at the top or bottom
of the page. What Help is saying is that you must click on View / Head and
Footer and then create the text or image that you want to be repeated on
each page. This could be a simple line of text but it can equally be a
picture which you can drag to the middle of the page. As long as it is
created when you are in the View / Header and Footer mode it will be
repeated on each page. I hope I've explained that alright. The best way to
see it for yourself is to click on View / Header and Footer and paste in a
picture and drag it to the middle of your page. Then check Print Preview to
see that it actually appears on every page.

That helps Mark. I pasted a picture into the Header box and resized it so
it nearly fills the page. And its repeating on all pages...good.
But I don't see how to drag for eg a small picture to the centre of the
page. There are no "Move" arrows on the edge of the Header box, just resize
arrows.
And then I can't type text on top of this image, the cursor is below my
image as if it's text.

Don't drag the header box - just drag the picture wherever you want on the
page. It doesn't have to be confined to the header rectangle.

Right click on the picture (while in View Header and Footer mode)
Click on Format Picture.
Click on the Layout tab.
Choose a different wrapping style. All except "in line with text" should
solve your problem of not being able to drag the picture around. The 'behind
text' option will allow you to type over it.

These instructions are for Word 2000. Something similar will work for Word
97 but the details will be slightly different.

Surprisingly, since graphics are by default inserted floating in Word 97,
you've managed to insert the graphic inline. Go to Format Picture and, on
the Position tab, check the box for "Float over text." Then you'll be able
to drag the graphic wherever you want it. For more on this, see "WD97: How
