Watermark printing to laserjet 1000

Using Word 2003, Windows XP SP2, HP Laserjet 1000 with the latest driver,
when printing text watermarks using for example times new roman or arial
font, only a few characters of the watermark are printed. Same with
horizontal or diagonal watermark. When using print preview, it's correct.
When actually printed, I get basically every other character.

Uncheck the "semitransparent" box in Format | Background | Printed Watermark.
