Watermark Weirdness

T.I.A. for your help. I have two files both created by me in Office
2004. The earlier file (#A) displays a newly inserted watermark
without a problem. File (#B) refuses to display any watermark no
matter what configuration I try. Both files are in view, file (#B) is
not locked; aside from the size difference, there is no other
dicernable difference, yet there is some kind of fundamental
difference to Word... HELP?!?

Power Mac G5 (June 2004) @ 2x2.5GHz, 5GB ram, 2x250GB  HDD, 2 Firewire
drives (125GB - 20GB PEERLESS) :: 23" Cinema Display :: OS X (10.4.10)

Watermarks are inserted in the Header or Footer container of the document.

It is possible to corrupt the section break that stores the watermark, and
if you do, nothing will make sense :)

Try a Maggie:

1. Create a new blank document
2. Carefully select all of the text in the bad document EXCEPT the last
paragraph mark
3. Copy it.
4. Paste in the new document.
5. Save under a new file name and close all, then re-open.

This technique for de-corrupting is known as "Doing a 'Maggie'", after
Margaret Secara from the TECHWR-L mailing list, who first publicised the
technique.

Hope this helps

More Weirdness: Yes, that problem was solved by creating a new blank
then transferring the text w\o the end paragraph mark; yeah, I've been
there before, it's just that it's been such a looong time ago! Now my
watermark shows up in the 'Page Layout view' just as it's supposed to
and in every section (9 out of 11), thank you very much but guess what
NOT in Print Preview - NOWHERE!?!

Have you checked Word Preferences> Print> Include with document - Drawing
Objects? If that's not it we'll need more info, such as...

You state the docs were *created* with Office 2004, but are you still using
that version or have you upgraded to 2008? In either case, what is currently
your specific update level? Have you recently checked for an updated printer
driver? Is the watermark a text watermark or a picture?

Cybertaz:
Still using Office 2004 v 11.5.3 (081112): yes, 'Include w\document'
was checked off (I learned the hard way!) and the watermark is text -
automatic siziing @ 25% transparency & gray, slant. Now for the
twist!! I emailed one of the sections of the file\booklet to my
fiance, she also could't see the watermark in Print Preview but was
able to quite plainly see the watermark after it was printed just as
I'd described to her how it was designed!!

Then it sounds to me like the problem is with the Transparency setting -
that's why her system will print it & yours won't... She has a different
printer, doesn't she? Many printers have difficulty producing content below
a certain threshold, so I'd suggest that you first make sure that your
printer driver is fully updated. If you still have a problem reduce the
transparency to 0. It may also help to boost up the quality at which you're
printing & check the other print settings. Another possibility is to output
the file as a PDF & print that.

BTW - If she increases her zoom level in Print Preview I'll bet she'll be
able to see the watermark on screen :)

Cybertaz:
For starters, my printers are 'down for the count', so I never did any
printing and I sent a section of the file as a PDF to my fiance. I did
try your suggestion of amping the zoom - no difference! For the time
being, especially since the watermark really is there, it's just that
Word won't display it within Print Preview, I'll let this one be
ANOTHER 'Word Weirdness'!! Now for the 'cherry on top'. I inserted the
same watermark into another booklet (multi-sectioned file) and it
looked fine in Page Layout View (normal),throughout the document. When
I went to Print Preview, the watermark appeared on the first page of
its intended section, as I scrolled to the next page ... it
disappeared and when I returned back to the first page yes, you
guessed it ... it wasnt't there! I gave up and I'm moving on; the
watermark is there it's just that Word won't display it!?!
