.WAV Files download instead of open

K

Kelly

All -

I am trying to include a 2 minute .wav file on my homepage, but when
clicked, it downloads to the Temporary File rather than opening in
RealPlayer, Windows Media, or whatever the default player is for the
visitor's PC.

I have imported the .wav into my web folders so that the shortcut points to
it, but again, it downloads rather than opening.

How can I fix this?????

What do you mean by shortcut point to it?

How did you import it into your web?

Did you have a web open in FP first?

How did you create a link to it?

Thanks for the response. I used the FP 'Help' feature (should be labeled 'NO
&$*@! HELP') - read my answers below your questions.

I have a link on my homepage 'Special Audio Message from Kelly Troy' that
hyperlinks to the imported WAV file in the web site folders (per the FP
'Help' instructions). When you click the link, it should (in theory) open
the WAV in whatever the default media player is.
How did you import it into your web?

I imported by FILE --> IMPORT --> ADD FILE and put the imported WAV into a
folder in my FP web site. It's there and I can see it.
Did you have a web open in FP first?

Yes, otherwise I could not have imported it into my site folder (?)
How did you create a link to it?
I created a text link as well as a graphic hyperlink that link directly to
the file - no different than if you were linking text to a PDF document.

I hope this information helps as this is a simple issue that is driving me
nuts! (like most 'simple' issues)

Ok, it appears that you have done everything correctly.

How are you testing this link, on your local machine via File Menu | Preview in Browser or on the
live/remote site where you bring up the page and then click on the link?

or

Are you testing via the Preview tab in FP?

I created the site on my desktop and I am using my laptop to access the
'live' published page at www.streetsmartinvesting.net The same issue
occurs in either case (Preview or Live) - it starts downloading to my
'Temporary Folder' instead of opening in my default media player (Windows
Media Player)

18 meg is a pretty big file, maybe that's the problem. Try it with a smaller
file as an experiment, see what happens.

Ok, I see the issue and it is not FP related, it is Windows XP / IE 6 related in that .wav file
downloads, then open to play via a new browser window.

This is the link to the downloads page for Microsoft media Encoder 9. With
this program you can change the file size/quality/type/etc. I used this for
our church site to shring the file size to and to make it suitable for
streaming play. There are settings for 32K, 56K, DSL, Cable, etc to suit the
needs of your viewers. This tool is a fairly good one. Depending on what
you are streaming, most talk/discussion voice files can be reduced
drastically without losing a lot of sound quality. Just take your time and
get a feel for the settings. If you change you audio content weekly, this is
a suitable way to go about it.

Good Luck,

Dan

Hi, I am having the exact problem and I don't see where it was completely
resolved here. I downloaded the encoder and changed the file from a WAV to a
WMA and selected web server as the distribution method. I decreased the file
size a lot but it is still only downloading.

Can anyone suggest a way to make it play automatically?

Thank you for your help.
