Email is not an instant communication media. I believe the email stnds
regards mail as succssessfull if received within 72 hours.
This may not be so for internal mail.
Setting OL to poll for less than 10 mins can cause resource probs.
If you want instant communication use Fax or phone.

It is hazardous and a nuisance to check your mails at less than 5 minute
intervals. Why? Because you typically aren't receiving mails at a rate
faster than that. You would be pounding the mail host to consume its
resources when there are no new mails to retrieve. Just think about
everyone standing at a corner of an intersection with each rapidly
pressing the cross-walk button (presuming that the button is actually
connected) with the lights changing just as rapidly. No one gets to
cross because everyone is keeping the lights ridiculously busy. A mail
host can handle only so many connects and mail sessions per minute and
you are just wasting its resources.

A problem that occurs with rapid (short) polling is that your first mail
session has not had time to complete in yanking your new mails before
the second poll interval occurs. The first mail session is still busy
and then you abort it by starting the second mail session before the
first one completes. This can result in receiving duplicated mails,
attempting to redownload the same mail on every mail poll, especially if
one or more of the new mails are large, and can even trigger anti-spam
quotas at your ISP.

Besides, even if you were getting e-mails so fast that you needed to
poll for new ones every half minute, do you really think you could read
them all before the next bunch got download after another half minute?
The mail host is a *shared* resource, so learn to be polite in
cooperatively accessing it. It is not your mail server. It is several
users' mail server. Configure the poll interval at 5 minutes, or higher
if your average inbound rate for e-mails makes a longer poll interval
appropriate.

You don't use e-mail for immediate communications. Use a telephone or
pager (some e-mail services will even sent you alerts to your phone
number or pager to let you know when you have new mails). Use
MSN/Yahoo/AOL/LAN Messenger or some other non-email instant chat/prattle
client. Start getting off your butts and walk over to the other
person's cubicle.
