Wd2002 Slow

I have Office97 and now installed offXP.

I had no problem operating in Word 97. I am using the
same forms, macro programs, templates, menus,
autocorrect, etc. in Word in Office XP as I used in
Office 97 Professional, but I do not have the same
response.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Office XP and thought
things had improved. But today, the more I used Word, the
more unusual things began to happen. For instance, I
could call up a macro that replaced text in my document
and it would sit there for many, many seconds without
operating, and then if I touched the mouse the macro
would finally operate and replace the text. It seems like
everything slows more and more the longer I work within
the Word program. I tried exiting Word and opening it
again, and it would seem fine at first and then do the
same thing again. At times I can almost see the cursor
flickering as I type, as if it is barely keeping up.

I also find that clicking on the close button on the
header/footer toolbar to exit the header does not work. I
have to double-click on the body of the report to get out
of the header.

My autocorrect does not seem to work exactly as it did in
Word 97. For instance, I have an abbreviation of "yo"
that expands to "-year-old". I used to be able to type a
number, such as 50, and the characters "yo" (50yo), and
it would expand to "50-year-old". Now, it doesn't work
unless there is a space between the number and the
abbreviation (50 yo). But this defeats the whole purpose
of the abbreviation because it leaves a space between the
number and the first dash (50 -year-old).

Another problem I encounter is when I am inserting text
in Normal view that alters where the page separates to a
new page, the horizontal line indicating the page break
does not refresh itself unless I go out of normal view
and back in again; then I can see the change.

What is your operating system? How much RAM do you have? How much hard drive
space free? Word needs a *lot* of free hard drive space to operate properly.

Okay, you didn't address the most important question, free HD space, but
from the rest of the specs, I would imagine that that is adequate. The
reason I asked is that you could be running Office 97 (as I was before I
upgraded) on an older computer packed to the gills, and I can tell you from
personal experience that this definitely degrades performance!

You might try the troubleshooting steps at
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm to see if
perhaps the problem is caused by some corruption in Normal.dot or the
presence of a disruptive add-in.
