WDS stops working after reboot

After a reboot, searches no longer work in ON 2007. Indexing Options shows
"Waiting for Status Update," which never comes. (Is this a common
complaint?)

After installing WDS, on service clearly related to it appears:
searchindexingservice, or something like that. A little later it seems it
is joined by searchfilter.exe and searchprotocol.exe (more or less. I
haven't rechecked these names before writing).

On reboot, these two newer processes are gone for good. So I wonder what
these other processes do. Does the failure of the index result from the
suppression of one of these processes on reboot?

Those processes are WDS3. If they are not running, then WDS isn't
running...

Those two disappearing processes have disappeared without an interposed
reboot. And I'm discovering they are not easy to get back. Uninstalling and
reinstalling WDS doesn't automatically have that effect. The only way I know
to get them back is to uninstall and reinstall both OneNote2007 and WDS. 3.

What seems likely, though, is that the failure of indexing on my system is
caused by the disappearance of these two processes. Searchindexer.exe
continues to run and gives the illusion of effectiveness -- sometimes, while
at others Indexing Options dialog waits for information that never arrives.

Now if I could start those processes, I would have something to try. It's
been said that they are services, but they don't appear as services. Neither
they nor WDS appears anywhere in my over-featured startup manager. So I have
no way to control them, which is probably good, because I would likely make
it worse.

Searchfilterhost.exe is the WDS host process for the IFilter objects
corresponding to the files that WDS is indexing at that time. If you
want to get it to run, the easiest thing to do would be to modify some
files in the folders that WDS indexes.
Searchprotocolhost.exe is the WDS host process for the protocol
handlers, including the mapi and oneindex protocols. If you want this
process to run, you'll need to launch either Outlook or OneNote and make
some changes to some page/mail item so that they get indexed.
Their disappearance is very unlikely to be the cause of indexing
failures, but could be a symptom of some other failure. If the two
processes don't start but everything else appears to be normal, it's
likely WDS thinks there isn't anything left to index. Try making some
edits to some pages to see if that fixes it.

Yes, I tried the trick of making edits to various pages. That seemed to
work for a short while, and I actually got the ability to search in ON
2007 for the first time. Then it stopped and seemed to acquire immunity to
the trick. More likely it takes quite numerous changes to desultory pages
to wake up these processes, and the remedy soon becomes worse than the
disease. In other words, the trick of changing page contents must be
reapplied at short intervals. Perhaps just for the beta MS should program
a little macro, in VBS or whatever's used these days, to change random
pages automatically on demand or 10-minute intervals ;)
