WDS3 Beta 2

Dang! I just uninstalled ON 2007 and reinstalled 2003 because of the poor
search performance and system hit of WDS 3.0. I'm excited about an improved
beta 2, but will wait for good reports before returning to ON 2007.

Thank-you! We've got the UI back! And, although I'm not done
rebuilding the index, at first blush WDSb2 seems much better behaved
than the prior "beta" (which I thought of more as an alpha...).

Any word yet on whether IFilter support has been enabled, and/or whether
new IFilter plugins need to be snagged to search pdf's, etc.?

No idea. All the information I have is what you can read in the KB
article.

The OneNote IFilter will work with WDS, although you may need to wait
for B2TR to come out. PDF search should work as well, after you install
the PDF IFilter.

Just curious (never before use WDS):
What is "IFilter"?

Where could I obtain this IFilter for PDFs?

I do not believe Microsoft publishes a filter for PDFs. You can try
Adobe, or maybe some of the other third party sites.

To answer your other question:
"IFilter" is an interface defined by the indexing service that provides
applications with a standard way of asking "what's in this random file
that I found lying on your drive", without having to know anything about
the file format. To make this work all the publishers of various file
formats need to implement a dll that exports the interface and knows
about their particular file format. A different application (such as
WDS) can then go and ask the operating system "please load the IFilter
for this particular file", which then allows it to extract the content
and do whatever it likes with it.

Thanks a lot for your reply and your most valuable hints.

After reading your reply I googled a bit and found the PDF iFilter on
Adobe's site
http://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobat/win/all/ifilter60.exeAdobe
and another one on iFilterShop
http://www.ifiltershop.com/pdfplusfilter.html

I could not yet get it work, however. Could it be that an update for
the new WDS version might be needed?

Thanks for your comprehensive explanation.
Now found IFilter.Org

with most useful links.

One learns day by day and I'm really most thankful that you take the
time to help even with this kind of OT questions.

This is good news, because I'm running Office 2007 and production WDS doesn't
index my Outlook and the earlier WDS3 had no UI.

However, my problem is that after downloading the software, when I open it
to try to install it, I get an immediate error message: "Setup has failed.
Make sure Terminal Services are enabled before re-running setup." I am
running XP SP2 and cannot find Terminal Services to enable them.

Does anyone know anything that could help me with this? I never had this
problem installing previous versions of WDS.

Right-click My Computer, select Manage. Expand "Services and
Applications" and click on Services. Then find "Terminal Services". Make
sure that the startup method is NOT set to Disabled.
Keep in mind that this new beta will not work with OneNote Beta 2.
You'll have to wait for B2TR to get it to work with ON. No ETA on that.
