We are considering adopting Project Server 2003 becuase of a large installed
base of Project 2003 Standard/Professional. At this time, it is cost
prohibitive to go to 2007. We have Sharepoint 2003 available (but not
installed).

We want to be able to display project information in browsers (primarily
IE), and to have users update Project files using a Web Interface - they
would not necessarily have Project on their desktops. This would include
adding tasks, changes to %Complete, resource assignments, delete tasks all
via a web browser.

Is this available "out of the box" or do we need additional development?

If this is possible, what budget range might be reasonable for us to
estblish to hire a consultant to do this for us? We are in San Diego.

Project Server 2003's Project Web Access interface is specifically designed
so that project team members can view project information, request and submit
status reports, receive and update task information, etc. without having
Project Professional installed.

As for consultants, can't help you there, but I'm sure someone on this board
will point you in the right drection.

Keep in mind that your Project Standard users will not be able to use
Project Server. So, you will need to purchase upgrades for them. At this
point, you can only purchase 2007 licenses, but you can still deploy 2003.
If that doesn't break your budget, then you're good to go.

So, PS2003 will essentially give me a Web interface to Project.mpp files on
the server. A person with correct access rights would be able to essentially
use Project functions via a browser without the need for MS Project Prof
installed.

We're talking the basic funcations ... add tasks, status, change resource
assignments, rebaseline, constraints, etc.

As Gary intimated, folks that create and update plans and add resources to
the enterprise will require a Project Professional license.

Project Web Access, the browser interface, provides users with the ability
to create transactions that ultimately will cause updates to a plan, but the
transactions will have to be approved by a PM and then they will be applied
against a plan, albeit automatically, using Project Professional.

The PWA interface transactions include: actual time or % Complete against
tasks, assign person to a task, define new tasks, task delegation, status
report request, status report etc.

I hope this helps.
