Web host called FP "laughing stock"

I was working with my client and his local web host provider to try to get a
form onto the client's website. It wasn't working and I was looking at the
host for a solution and he was pointing the finger at me and (with my client
copied on the email) told me to learn Dreamweaver b/c Frontpage is considered
a laughing stock among professional web developers.

Now, isn't this sort of a "dated" accusation in the web design community?
Do you guys have to constantly defend using FP for web design too? Just
wondering what you MVP's tell your client's if they question your tools.

I would say it's typical of hosts. Your response would be "it's not the
tool, it's the user that makes the difference".

I presume that your local web host provider is not a developer. However,
considering the technical ignorance of this provider, and his/her
willingness to advertise such ignorance, I would find another host.

The quality of any software is not determined by taking an opinion poll. It
is determined by using the software. FrontPage has been around for a dozen
years now, and is immensely popular software. Apparently, the majority of
users have voted with their pocketbooks. But your host sounds like a
"religious" fanatic. Such people are not reasonable. There is no point in
debating them.

Yes, and I think it's important to add that neither FrontPage or Dreamweaver
will produce good results for someone who doesn't know at least the basics
of HTML and CSS.

It's definitely bad form and bad business to say something like that to you
and cc the client. I would make it real bad business for the host by firing
them and find one that can be more professional and helpful.

He's true, but truth is not always good to be told, especially in
business.

What's true about it? There is a significant difference between fact and
opinion. The statement that "FrontPage is considered a laughing stock among
professional developers" is necessarily an opinion. There is simply no
statistical data to support the statement. Therefore, it is an opinion. The
fact that the host (and apprently you) believes or contends it to be a fact
only illustrates a flaw in the reasoning ability of the one holding the
opinion. That is, the holder of the opinion can not or will not discriminate
between fact and opinion. And that is a fatal flaw.

Keep the email, it is good evidence for a lible(sp?) suit

Well, I'm talking about my experience in web design forums, from what
I've seen over the years: from nice CSS web sites developped by
professionals who use professional tools and not so nice web sites /
amateurish / IE-only pages designed in Front Page. All designers I've
heard bashing Front Page are outstanding professionals. Just an
observation. Each one uses what he's more comfortable with.

I belong to quite a few forums also. Yes, people bash FP.
There are so-called purists out there who insist on only the
216 web safe colors and hand-code all of their pages. FP is
more than just a WYSIWYG designer- there are many other
tools contained in it that are great for usage with any
site.
Anyone can abuse a tool, which leads to the amateur look,
regardless of what software contained the tool

Your experience in web design forums is an experience of hearing opinions,
and the opinions of those who happen to frequent those forums. One of the
best things that ever happened to me was the fact that I spent much of my
younger life moving around from one part of the country to another, and
having the opportunity to visit other countries as well. I learned that what
one sub-culture believes as "fact" is often a matter of the prevailing local
opinion.
