Web Site Page Alignment

P

PeterD

I am new to Publisher and just finished using it to create my first website.
I'm srue this question has already been posted, but I was unable to find an
answer.

When I view my website from my machine everything looks great up on the web.
I'vee had a few people look at the site and when they go to view, things are
slightly misaligned for them. Any ideas on the things I should check?
Thanks in advance!

PeterD,

Publisher produces static web pages that can appear different depending on
the resolution on the monitor. Also, if the viewer has changed their text
size, that can shift things around. Post the URL of your site, and we'll
take a look.

More to your issue...

Depending on how your text or table is positioned on the page, nearby
objects may shift position slightly. You can usually fix this issue by doing
one or both of the following:

Extend the bottom edge of the text box so that it is further away from the
bottom of the last line of text in the text box.

Move objects that are close to the text box further away from it.

not resolution, viewport size - for a good explanation read Patty's site:

The responses from D.F. are all correct, and the points in the article Rob
points out, are all correct. Welcome to web design. Not an art and not a
science. More like, a creative wing and a pray. (I'm feeling smart this
evening ;-)
Additionally there are any number of mistakes you could have made in the
layout, and then there are the browsers - each make of browser will do things
differently.
The solution is "test". You test the page(s) and modify and test again, and
repeat. To really do it right requires at least testing in the different
browsers. To push it yet further requires testing at different resolutions.
One nice feature of FrontPage 2003 is that it has built-in support for both
of those test scenarios.
How far you take "test and modify" depends on how much you care about every
viewer getting the same result.
That said, you start off with a handicap using Publisher, because
Publisher's ease of use and quickness is a trade-off for compatibility.

The reason you see the file list is due to not having a Home page
(index.htm) as David points out. In addition, since your web does not have
FP extensions you should also read David's piece here:

http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/articles/category/1921.aspx

regarding uploading (Not Publishing via HTTP) via the *ftp* method.

Rob,

Thanks for the comment and link, but I guess I don't understand why viewport
size vs. resolution. From what I understand the area of your window where
the contents are shown is called the viewport. Publisher produces fixed
width pages and varying the viewport only changes whether you will have a
horizontal scroll bar or not. The length of Publisher pages is a bit
variable. If you change the text size in your browser, the text box may
elongate to accommodate larger text and will push other page elements "out
of the way", but it won't get wider. Please explain what I am missing? Why
would varying viewport size affect the alignment of page elements on a fixed
width page?

I believe what you're saying is related to absolute positioning, which Pub
uses for WordArt, Textboxes, Draw stuff, not necessarily viewport size.

Hai, I'm Andreas from Indonesia.
Actually i have almost a same problem. I can't align my page in the
center area. so if we explore with high resolution monitor it will be
show in left alignment.
What can I do to fix this problem ?

because you are limited to what you can do with Publisher generated webs.

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I played around a bit with some
alignment (overlapping text boxes for the most part) and I think it has been
fixed. At least, everything seems aligned on my machine and on those of the
people that I have asked to check the site. Here is the link to the site
http://home.cogeco.ca/~dundasfi/DundasFI.htm. Let me know if you see any
issues...thanks again and I appreciate the help and suggestions. Take care,
Peter.

Your home folder is totally browsable because you don't have an index
page...you're using DundasFI.htm...which no one will be able to find unless
you tell them where it is - or maybe that is what you want?

Peter,
Here is a photo of what it looks like here on my Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop in both Firefox and Internet Explorer.
http://www.ponkapoagcamp.org/publisher/page.jpg
Look for an earlier discussion in this newsgroup where I pointed to the reason that this happens. Or look at
http://www.ponkapoagcamp.org/publisher/ for a discussion that might need some further elaboration. I wrote a
post processor that fixes the issue for me - I will try to remember to post the c code for it when I get home.
