Web Wiz Forums in New Subweb, Published with FP2003

R

Russell

Hi,
I've downloaded and imported the Web Wiz Forum unzipped files and folders
(.asp/Access-based forum software) into a new subweb and published to my
live server (Microsoft bCentral.) I have 3 questions for someone who uses
this forum software:

1. The forum subweb site is pretty slow. I realize that I'd get better
performance with SQL Server as opposed to Access DB-based, but my host
doesn't support it in this package. Since the forum has just been created
and no one is aware of it yet, excessive posts/online users definitely isn't
a current issue. If you want to view it, it's at
http://tastycomputers.com/forum/default.asp. My main site is speedy. Is
this slower .asp forum subweb performance normal?

2. My host claims that they support default.asp and/or index.asp as "start"
pages in webs, but I can't get it to work with an .asp extension, so my
"home" page for the subweb is default.htm, a page that just has a simple
JavaScript page redirect to default.asp. When I've attempted to change the
home page to the .asp page in FrontPage 2003, it wants me to rename the
default.asp page to default.htm. Is there something that I'm missing here?

3. I'm planning to perform daily publishes of this live subweb to a local
hard drive for additional backup security. If I later recalculate
hyperlinks in FrontPage on either the live site or the local copy, will that
screw with the .asp-based web in any way, or should I not recalculate
hyperlinks? I did notice last evening when I published the live site to a
local location, the online version of the Access database increased in size
from 568K to 667K on the local copy, so that concerned me as well.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

#1 I have look at this app, but currently do not use it, however it does appear slow and that can be
based on the type of connection being used, the server it is being run on, etc. and overall how well
it was coded.

#2 If local you are working against a web server, then you need to default page for the web to be
default.asp and not default.htm.

#3 Since you have the forum in a subweb, recalculating hyperlinks on the root web will have no
impact and most likely you will rarely need to do this on the subweb, since FP is really not manage
the links within the forum.

The difference in file size between the two copies of your database, would be related to the file
cluster size being different on the server, as compared to your local machine.

Thanks for the response, Thomas. I don't quite understand your reply to #2.
I want the default page to be default.asp, but FrontPage won't allow me to,
without renaming the extension to .htm, anyway. I'm not sure why. It's
really not that big of a deal, as all my links to the forum from the main
site will be linked to the default.asp page, but there are auto-reply e-mail
elements programmed in the forum subweb that generate links in the e-mails
to the "default" page in the forum, and it won't allow me to change it from
default.htm to default.asp, so that's why I created the default.htm page
with the JavaScript redirect to default.asp. Regarding the cluster size
issue of the .mdb file, I thought that as well, but 100KB is a big
difference, and I renamed the local copy and publish it to the live site,
and the 100KB difference in size remained on the live site, so that's
definitely a concern, if I'm planning on ever having to clean up the
database in Access locally then republish.

Russell,

#2 are you working with IIS locally?

Whenever I download an Access database and prior to re-uploading I always do a compact and repair
first. General rule once your forum is active, you should never download and then re-upload the
database unless you first shut down the forum so that no new post are made.

Thanks, Tom.
I just publish locally as a standard disc-based file system, but can publish
locally as a live IIS web if that's better. I'll definitely inactivate the
live forum before working on files locally.

Russell, with the site open under IIS, then you should be able to set the default document to
whatever name you want under IIS MMC, select the web, then properties, then documents, either add
the name or move it to be first.

thanks for the honorable mention! ;-)

it is also easy to publish and set up from within the FrontPage interface.
there isn't one single file to edit. it uses the server.mappath for the db
path and FrontPage's db connection feature does a good job of marking the
file as "writable".

While I haven't looked at the code it's clear that something so easily
deployed is the product of good and conscientious work.

Your's looks nice! Have you run into any problems customizing/editing it
with FP? I don't think I'm going to work with it locally though.

I've seen mention of it being "skinable" but haven't actually found any good
skins for it though, so I probably just end up doing a little tweakage.

I'm amazed that one guy wrote that whole thing and that it's so easy (so
far) to admin.

Looking forward to any suggestions you may have...

Robo,
The only time I got FrontPage involved with the forum at all was when I
created a subweb locally, then imported the forum files into it, then
FrontPage created the global.asa file and the _fpclass folder with 3 new
files (fpdblib.inc, fpdbrgn1.inc, fpdbrgn2.inc) within that folder. I then
published the forum subweb to a new subweb on my live site, then haven't
touched the forum with FrontPage since. I've been setting everything up via
the live .asp page administrative menus.

I did edit the css files in notepad before importing them, changing fonts
and colors to match my main web, and I exchanged a couple of the graphics
files for my own versions; that's about as far as I've gotten in "skinning"
the forum.

My forum subweb is SOOOOOOOOOOO slow and I can't figure out why. My host,
Microsoft bCentral, claims that it isn't their server, but something in the
way I have the pages coded. I'm at a loss to figure it out. Anyway, I
haven't advertised mine at all yet either, until I can it working properly.
I've tested the e-mail (CDONTS) and private messaging components, and they
work fine, as well as posting, replying, editing and deleting posts. It's
just so slow! Maybe someone some ASP/Access knowledge can jump in with a
suggestion on where to begin to look for the slowness issue.

Anyway, I'm planning on donating funds to the creator as soon as I get this
thing working like I'd like. Good luck with your forum.

looks like an arrangement going on in the /includes folder between the
obvious header, footer, etc. also there is skin_file.asp, style sheets,
etc. Might want to see if someone sells them. there have to be a number of
aficionados selling mods and stuff.

Wow, you're right it is abbynormally slow. I logged in but couldn't wait

faster.

I couldn't get the email to work with CDONTS so switched to ASPEmail...dunno
what the heck either of them are but aspemail works.

still trying to find the pages to alter the look of the main page...I'll get

Hi Rob,

Start digging through here:

http://www.webwizguide.info/wwf_forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=2

Change the dropdown to show topics from the last year. There are quite a few
asp developers there, but be careful with the mods..one little mistake can
cause much grief..as long as you backup though you should have no problems.

Hi Rob,

Yes my address works..but it is "munged" for the spambeteers! :)

If you take out the two "AA" in front of frontier I will get the email.

What you are really looking for is a "skin" to change the look. Those are
really pretty easy to do. Most are zip files that tell you how to do it
within a readme.txt files..usually just a collection of different images and
..css files.

And yes some of those .asp guys can be a little scary!

Thanks Joe,

I was perusing those this morning. Some of the mod-guys are a little scary.
I'm still trying to kinda get the jist of it all. Like I said to Chris, I
really don't want to change that much anyway.
But, I need to understand the whole concept so I don't have to bother you
guys in 6 monnths when my site implodes!

btw, does your frontiernet.net addr work? I sent you something last week and
it bounced.
