Website Crashes Explore and Closes Connection

D

David

I created my daughter's website (www.widomaker.com/~dcjones) with Publisher
2003 SP1. Several people told me the website crashes Internet Explorer.
This has happened to people with dial up and high speed internet connections.
If they have a dial up internet connection the connection closes.

The problem is happening as the home page is loading. The problem does not
appear to be tied to a particular object on the home page. People say after
Explorer crashes they will try to visit the site again. They say it looks
like the site is making further progress loading and Explorer crashes again.
They will try a third time and the Explorer might immediately crash. This
does not always happen in this order. I am just trying to illustrate the
problem does not happen as a particular picture, etc. loads.

If a visitor clicks a button on the navigation bar before Explorer crashes
they are able to go to the selected page and all of the other pages are
viewable. If they attempt to go back to the home page Explorer crashes.

The only thing different on the home page from the other pages is a third
party site counter. In testing this problem, one time I removed the counter,
published the site, and had someone experiencing this problem visit the site.
The site still crashed their Explorer and closed their internet connection.

I read in this discussion group the possibility of this being linked to add
in toolbars such as the Google toolbar. This problem is happening on
computers without any add in toolbars.

Here are some other random findings and things I have tried. I know this is
happening with computers running the latest version of Internet Explorer (6.0
SP2). I am not sure about earlier versions. The PNG and VML options have
been disabled from all pages in the website. I had some people reset their
Advanced Internet Options in Explorer (Tools>Internet Options>Advanced
tab>Restore Defaults) with no success. I had people clear out their
temporary internet files and revist the site and the same problem occurs.

When I first published the website, people with AOL were having a similar
problem. I discovered disabling the TopSpeed AOL Browser Accelerator and
setting up the AOL browser to never compress graphics fixes the problem in
AOL. The problem I am discussing here is not limited to a particular
internet service provider. I checked with some people to be sure they are
not running some type of accelerator. They were not and they were still
having problems.

I have never experienced this problem myself or seen it first hand. I tried
the website on several computers but have never encounterd the problem. It
seems more people can view the site than can not but I would like everyone to
be able to see it. Any help is appreciated.

As I stated in a recent thread of the same topic, this is a very rare and
random event and the MS Publisher group has identified it as an IE 6 error.
Unfortunately last I knew the IE group had yet to isolate what is the
contributing factor. Other then it is apparently due to plug-in's and/or
add-in's, some third party application hooked into IE.
There is nothing more available on the topic at this time.

"...very rare..."? Approximately 25% of the family and friends I have
directed to the site have this problem. "As I stated in a recent thread of
the same topic..." Must not be to rare a problem.

"...random event..."? The 25% experiencing this problem are having the
problem all the time.

"...the MS Publisher group has identified it as an IE 6 error..."? The
people experiencing this error don't have a problem visiting other sites
created with other web authoring tools. Seems like the IE 6 error has
something to do with MS Publisher.

"...other than it is apparently due to plug-in's and/or add-in's, some third
party application hooked into IE." As I stated in my original post this is
happening on computers without these add-ins.

I know it's frustrating for you.

It is for me too, the couple of customers that I've dealt with previously on
this resolved the issue by leaving Publisher.

I will be reviewing this matter to see if anything new ever developed.

Thanks for your response. I was hoping to avoid leaving Publisher. I know
it is not the best web authoring tool. However, from my experience, it seems
to be the best for being able to get a web page up an running quickly. It
was easy to learn and intuitive.

If people are able to resolve this problem by leaving Publisher and using
another web authoring tool wouldn't this indicate this is a Publisher issue
or a combination of Publisher and Explorer issue and not an Explorer issue
alone? Is there somewhere I can relay my experience to Microsoft? Does the
fact I posted this problem on this discussion board mean Microsoft will be
alerted to the problem? Is there some sort of web site I can visit to see if
anything new develops regarding this problem?

Thanks again for your help.
