Weird characters in 11.5+ when Field Codes are used

I created a word document that used Field Codes for placing the Year, Month
etc. I did this on a machine running MS Word 11.6+. When I pull up the
documents with the field codes in them, the 11.5+ machine does not appear to
be able to properly interpret the field codes. I then ran Office Update and
upgraded to same version as the machine that created the document, still
cannot properly render the field codes.

What gives here? Thx....

Hi Randy,

On the errant machine, if the problem is that you're seeing something like
{DATE}, press Alt-F9 to toggle the field code off. You can also do this via
Tools|Options|View and unchecking the 'field codes' option.

Thanks, but those are not "weird" characters. That would actually make sense
and would have lead me to the solution. By weird I mean "@$^#&" kinda stuff.
I do have an underline ("__________") preceding the field codes where this
is happening, not sure if that makes a difference.
