Weird Message

I bought a new laptop and it didn't have Microsoft Office (word, powerpoint,
excel, etc.) installed. I wanted these programs so I took an old Office 97
CD I had and installed these programs onto my laptop. Everything works OK
except every time I open up one of my Word documents a box with this message
pops up - C:\...\filename...is being used by (my name). Do you want to make
a copy? I then have the option to make a copy or cancel. I cancel and move
on, but it is just a little aggravating for this message box to pop up every
time I try to work on an old document. Does anyone know if/what I can do to
get rid of this message? Thanks in advance for any help offered.

No joy. No files found. Tried renaming normal.dot, no joy. I even went
out and downloaded Office 97 SR 1 and tried to download SR 2 but it said
that it couldn't install because files could not be found. Do you think
that I might need to uninstall office 97 and reinstall. I have loaded the
same programs on my desktop without problems. If I uninstall, will I lose
my office documents? Thanks

I didn't bring it up before, since it may not be relevant, but if your copy
of Office 97 is an OEM version (came installed on a previous computer), it
is not licensed for any other machine. This might or might not affect your
ability to install and use it on another machine, however; it could depend
on what the OEM added to the application to customize it.

You will not lose data by uninstalling, but this rarely solves problems,
either. Most problems can be addressed using the troubleshooting tips at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm

I did have Norton Internet Security when I installed the Office 97, but the
Norton just recently expired and I uninstalled it, but the problem with this
message popping up did not go away. Do you think that uninstalling Office
97 and reinstalling would help anything. Thanks

Personally, I don't think that uninstalling/reinstalling Office
97 would change anything in this case. The Office Plugin .dll
from Norton could still be registered in Windows even if Norton
has been uninstalled. Use Windows Explorer or My Computer to
search for an OFFICEAV.DLL file on the hard drive (be sure to
include system and hidden files/folders in the search options).
If you find it, note the folder where it is located, and use the
"regsvr32 /u" method described in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 to unregister the DLL.

I ran a search from My Computer including system and hidden folders and no
such file was found. Any other things to try. Thanks
