weird symbols in document

I have kept a word document for sometime now reccently i
pulled it up to add something to it and it had a bunch of
garbage on it and ti was several pages long it had a bunch
of spaces as well the symbols were crosses and boxes i
would delete and saved and reopen and there they were.

Any ideas what iam doing wrong?
