weird uid Word X conflict

We are using Panther and the Active Directory plug-in for our users.
We have found a strange issue, if the generated UID (which the AD
plug-in derives) for the user is > 1000000000, Word X and the other
Office apps crash on launch. I believe this has to do with the
creation/update of either the Font Cache or the registration X cache.
I've attempted to preload working versions of these preferences into
the user's home directory, but then I get the error "Word can't launch
due to not enough RAM or Disk Space". Any ideas on working around this
- other than upgrading to Office 2004 (although I don't know if it
solves the issue either...)
