Weird Word behaviour (help!)

Hi all

I have switched to an Intel Mini a few months ago, and I love OS X!
But I am Brazilian, and the the Brazilian keyboard layout provided by
Apple with OS X is incorrect.

After a lot of time looking for a solution in the internet, I finally
managed to get hold of a custom-made layout for the Brazilian layout.
I installed it, and everything worked great, except for Word, which
simply ignored one of the keys (see image below).

http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/8289/abnt2keyboardwe0.jpg

After looking for info on the subject on the internet (with no luck),I
assumed it was due to the fact that it wasn't Universal, and decided
to wait until Office 2008 is launched.

Today, though, I launched Excel and started working with a project,
and accidentally hit the "ignored" key. To my astonishment, it worked!
I then tested it on PowerPoint, and it works there as well. I think,
therefore, that the problem isn't with Rosetta, but with Word, though
I have no idea what it might be.

I uploaded the custom layout to this rapidshare, in case it helps

Does anyone have an idea/suggestion?

Hi Daniel:

Call me lazy, but I have an aversion to having to scroll all the way down
the bottom to get to your comment :)

I have an answer from MS for you: if you would be so good as to address
Curt's questions in detail... He could not get the problem to appear on his
test suite. Post in here or email to me is fine.

Best cheers

Hi John,
My name is Curt Laird and I am a member of the Word test team. I have spent
some time investigating this issue and have been unable to reproduce it (in
11 and 12). In order to troubleshoot this further, I'm going to need more
information. If you could, please see if you can find out the following:

1. OS Version (I've tried 10.4.9 Intel and PPC)
2. Version of Word (I'm using the latest - 11.3.5. I also tried the latest
build of 12)
3. Using a localized version of Word or ENU? If so, what locale?
4. What keyboard Hardware? (I've tried ANSI 101 and an ENU Apple keyboards)
5. What system locale settings? (I've tried Spain, US)
6. Whether or not this issue occurs with all fonts. If with select fonts,
which ones?
7. Pressing the problematic key with the Brazilian keyboard layout installed
results in a semi-colon and colon (w/shift). Are these the expected
characters?

Hopefully, we can get this reproduced and find a suitable workaround for
now.

Thanks for the help.

Hi John

Thanks for the quick support! Here are the answers:

1) I'm currently running Mac OS X 10.4.9 on an Intel Mac Mini, but
this problem has happenned to me since I bought this Mini (running OS
X 10.4.6 I think), which is my first Mac.
2) I've got Office 2004 for Mac and I am running Word version 11.3.5
3) I'm not sure how to verify this one, but all the menus are written
in English (File, Edit, etc) and I am using Portuguese (Brazil) as my
main spell-checking language, tough the problem persists when using
other spell-checking languages (I tested with French and English).
4) I've been using a Microsoft Digital Media Pro Keyboard, which I
bought here in Brazil about a year ago. I've used it with Windows as
well (no problems with Word 2003). The keyboard layout is called ABNT2
(Windows has support for it, but OS X doesn't), and it has 12 keys
between "Shifts", being the 12th key on the right the problematic.
5) I'm running OS X in English, but on the "Formats" menu in the
"International" pref pane, I've got Brazil (Portuguese) selected as my
Region.
6) It happens with all the fonts I tested (Times New Roman, Arial,
Times, plus a few others I picked randomly).
7) The semi-colon and colon key (the 11th one on the bottom row from
right to left) is the one to the left of the problematic key. I am not
sure if keyboards outside Brazil have 12 keys between "Shifts". Please
see this image: http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/6308/brazilianuskeyboardcomphf5.jpg

If there's anything that I didn't answer correctly, or if some more
info is needed, please post here or send me an email. Once more, thank
you for your support!

Cheers

Sorry, I made a mistake.

"7) The semi-colon and colon key (the 11th one on the bottom row from
RIGHT to LEFT)..." should actually read "LEFT to RIGHT"

Hi Daniel:

I doubt if Curt will answer directly (he gets yelled at if he wastes time in
here during what is a particularly busy period for the Word 2008 team...)

He's trying to find the problem. If he succeeds, chances are the "fix" will
be in the next version of Word. If he still can't reproduce, he will close
the bug.

Either way, neither of us are guaranteed to hear about it. Ping me again if
you have not hear anything in a month and I will ask.

Cheers
