What all are considered formatting changes in compare/merge docs?

I am trying to merge two documents with changes into the original and Word
tells me that only one set of formatting changes can be shown at a time. I'm
pretty sure formatting changes include bold, italic, underline, font changes,
etc., but I can't seem to find a definitive list so that I can determine what
all might be accepted without my knowledge. Can anyone point me to a list of
these types of changes? Thanks.

I don't have a complete list of what is considered a format change, however,
if you use ballons, the balloon will point out "formatted font: bold,
formatted underline, formatted indent, etc.
