what are the icons in outlook contacts?

D

Duane

Brand new to Outlook (using 2007), having come kicking and screaming I was
dragged from my beloved Outlook Express. So many questions!

One, though, is this: some of my contacts have a little blank rolodex card
icon next to them, and others have a similar icon with (what looks like) a
little bust of an orange-shirted person on the left side of the card. What
does the icon mean--either one of them? I notice that clicking on the header
of the icon column sorts them by icon style, so I assume it means something.

Any help?

Thanks,
Duane

Outlook's icons are explained here:
http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/icons.htm
If you can't find the icon you're asking about there, then it is no longer
relevant and may be a remnant from some earlier version of Outlook (which
you claim not to have used) or an artifact from creating Contacts by some
unsupported method like importing them.

Thanks for the link--very informative.
And, hey--there's the little contact card with the little orange-clad fellow
on it!
From your answer, it sounds like the "blank" card icon is a contact from
another source. That makes sense to me--I think some are imports from my OE
address book, and some are contacts from my company's "Global Address List".

Now, it might be helpful to distinguish the GAL contacts from my local ones,
but not the imports. Know of any way to convert the old icons to the new?

Thanks again,
Duane

No. Doubt it could be done. Not sure why one would even need to. There are
far better ways to group Contacts than by icon.
Seems odd that you were dragged kicking and screaming to Outlook if you've
been using Exchange. There is no other client for Exchange. You sure weren't
using OE with Exchange.

Are you looking in the contacts folder or in a distribution lists? The
rolodex is used for addresses typed in a DL. See
http://www.outlook-tips.net/archives/2004/20040525.htm for a link to a
program that will change the message class - this will fix the icon if they
are in the contacts folder.

Oh well, I'll ignore them. Thanks, Russ--sounds like the icon isn't that
useful, then, to most people.
Btw--my "kicking and screaming" was because I was forced to migrate. why?
Because my employer started using Exchange and, as you note, there was no
alternative.
Thanks again,
Duane

Thanks, Diane, for pointing that out--yes, I'm seeing these in a distribution
list. Sorry, I'm still behind on Outlook terminology: I have seen
"distribution list" a few times, but didn't realize it was what I knew as
address book "groups". And, I see now what you're saying about the rolodex
icon appearing within them as opposed to the contact list (or is it "address
book"--apparently I now have to learn the difference!).
Thanks again,
D.G.

Ah, I see. That explains it. I suspect there may be some other things about
Outlook that will annoy you, too. It can be a pretty cranky program.
