What are those horrible red squares and rectangles?

When I'm trying to put the end of a dynamic connector somewhere, these red
rectangles and squares suddenly appear, and make the ends of the connector
jump to insane (i.e., nowhere I want to put the end) places. I can't put the
end where I want to. How do I make Visio quit trying to do so much for me, it
makes it near-impossible to use.

The red squares show that the connector is about to be glued to a
shape. The red rectangles sound like the shape you are about to
connect to also being highlighted, but either the shape is very large
or you are working at a high zoom level. Maybe you have a large shape
covering much of your drawing page. Or perhaps one large shape on top
of smaller shapes.

So, the connector seems to want to attach to that shape when it's in the
shape's vicinity. When, I think, the connector tool was selected, I couldn't
prevent it from connecting to the red rectangle. I selected the pointer tool
(? the one represented by the cursor) and removed and re-added the connector,
and blew it up to like 300%, and then seemed to be able to put the end where
I wanted. Is there a way to make Visio be less smart and let me just put
things where I want them? I suppose I need to take some of the online
training courses--they're outstanding--but I'm kind of crushed at work and
don't have time.
Thanks,
JT

I there is a very large shape on the page then the connectors will
always want to connect to it.
Also, look at the snap and glue settings
menu Tools -> Snap and Glue
especially the advanced settings. What's the highest setting?
