What can prevent the Office 97 setup from running?

What can prevent Office 97 (updated to Sr-2) from running on my machine? The
laptop is running WindowsXP SP2 upgrade?

Clicking the 'add/remove' button in the control panel for Office 97
Professional does nothing. After clicking the button, the hour glass shows
for 30 seconds and then nothing happens. Then I cannot close the control
panel.

The setup.exe will not run manually nor automatically from the CD. The CD
works fine in a different machine.

I also copied the CD to a partition on the drive and tried to run setup.exe
from there, but no joy.

I do have Word, Excel, etc installed and running normally, but I want to add
office assistant help info for Word VBA.

I can't add or remove anything in Office 97 Pro.

What can cause this problem???
