what can Publisher 2002 do that Publisher 97 can"t ?

I'm thinking of upgrading.. after 10 years !

Changes I'd like to have in Pub 97?

- The ability to delete ranges of pages.

- adding a page and seeing the rest of the pages
readjust R and Left orientation.

- the ability to use and store JPEG images internally
(at the place of converting them to humungous BMP
files internally)

- More keyboard shortcuts

- Screen display zoomable and not restricted to 66%, 75%, 100% etc..

- fractional point sizes in fonts

- being able to work gracefully on documents the size of books..

Has Pub 2002 or 2007 incorporated these improvements ?
What other features do they offer?

Publisher 2002 is 5 years old... Publisher 2007 is the most recent version.

Introduced in Publisher 2007 (IIRC)
- adding a page and seeing the rest of the pages
readjust R and Left orientation.

Not sure what you mean here. You still can't have multiple orientations
in a file...

2002 introduced PNG compression for all.
2003 and later preserve JPEG compression, converts everything else to PNG.
- More keyboard shortcuts

Still no customisable shortcuts (without using a third-party add-in).
- Screen display zoomable and not restricted to 66%, 75%, 100% etc..

Not sure when this came in, possibly 2000.
- fractional point sizes in fonts

Last time I checked, adjustable to .1pt (whereas Word resricts you to
..5pt increments). Since 2002 or earlier.
- being able to work gracefully on documents the size of books..

With enough horsepower, you can do it with minimal lag, but Publisher
still isn't a terribly good tool for very long documents with consistent
layout. Word is often recommended for long documents, but it has all the
disadvantages associated with a word processor vs a DTP application.
Although I have little experience in the area, my gut says that the most
graceful way is to acquire and learn to use a professional-level DTP
application such as QuarkXPress or Adobe InDesign.

See above
What other features do they offer?

See:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/FX101759681033.aspx (for
improvements since Publisher 2002 in 2007)

This one takes you from 2000 to 2007:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/FX102144881033.aspx

Note that no version of Publisher since 97 can save files readable by
Publisher 97 (I like to joke that they lost the file format spec). All
versions since can read Publisher 97 files, but you can only save back
as far as 98 (and you definitely don't want to do that with book-sized
documents). Publisher 2002 - 2007 all share a common file format -
minimal formatting loss on sharing files between versions.

Nope, just tried to set a font size of 12.44 points and it was rounded
to 12.4.

My bad. I was thinking about the distance between lines.

Thanks Ed et co. from the newsgroup.

Your comments have helped to determine me. I downloaded the version
of Publisher 2007 on approval from the pearly Gator only to have it
byte me : it won't work on my version of Windows (W2K).

So be it.. ;)

Ah, the last version to run on W2K is 2003 (requires 2k SP3 or later).
2007 requires XP or later, as you seem to have ascertained.
