What causes a C++ runtime error when starting Word (Office XP)?

When starting Word by double clicking on a file in Explorer, I get a C++
runtime error & the applicaiton closes. When I start it from the Start menu I
get a notification that it failed to start last time, do I want to run in
Safe Mode, which will start & appears to run correctly. I have tried the
Detect & Repair but this did not help. I also get this error when I start
Outlook as I have Word as my email editor. I have applied all noted updates
for both Windows XP & Office XP but this does not help.

Thanks for the suggestion(s).
I tried to run with /a, it was Ok.
I renamed the normal.dot to normal.old, the 1st time it ran OK from the
START button but still crashed when double clicking on a .doc file from the
Explorer, then would not run from the Start button either.
I deleted the HKEY...... data, still crashes after starting.
Any other suggestions?

Does it still run if you start it with the /a switch?

What you have told me just doesn't make sense. Try running Detect and Repair
and if it still doesn't work, try going step-by-step through
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm again

Terry

OK, here it goes, heck I own this machine & have disks to reinstall
everything if I mess this up too bad so I did it anyway.

I started rerunning everything as you had suggested, that's the good news.
While in the registry I decided to poke around a little, I DO NOT RECOMMEND
this for most users. Changes in the registry are very delicate & we can make
a lot of mistakes here. Anyway I noticed that when I right click on the
office key & select permissions there is an user
S-1-5-21-3240586623-1295785981-2711261548-1003 listed which does not exist on
other keys. I went through the process of removing the grandfathering effect
(inherited from parent) & exited the registry. I restarted & everything is OK.

I also noted that when logged in as me (administrator privileges) that I
have a RECYCLER folder (not Recycle Bin & not in the root directory) in the
Explorer but when logged in as my Wife (also an administrator) there was no
Recycler folder. In that folder is another folder,
S-1-5-21-3240586623-1295785981-2711261548-1007, which looks like a recycle
bin (including the option to "Empty the Recycle bin" as in the real Recycle
Bin). These may all be normal but I just noted them today & while logged in
as my Wife, they are not present. I did not try to start Word while logged in
as the Wife, but with it working now I do not see much point in checking that.

I did want to point out that I had to leave the "inherit from parent" switch
for the Office key not selected (I first had to use the copy function for all
permissions for administrator, system, creator & user before disabling the
inherited permissions) in order to prevent the
S-1-5-21-3240586623-1295785981-2711261548-1003 from returning, but heck it
worked.

Could there be other ramifications from the
S-1-5-21-3240586623-1295785981-2711261548-1003 user on other programs? How
might I go about eliminating that user from the entire system?

Thanks for your help!

From Word COM Add-ins only the Web Page Wizard is displayed but not checked.
I also found 2 additional Add-ins in System-Info, Send-to-Bluetooth
(installed: yes) & the other I removed with Add/Remove programs (but I forgot
the name). The Web Page Wizard is shown but as install: no. None of these
appear when logged in as my Wife (see my previous post) & without changing
any of these, it is now running correctly so I do not think they are / were
related.

Thanks for the advice!
