What causes "memory could not be written" error?

Using a customized Normal.dot which is in use by several hundred users, all
of a sudden when a user checks a formfield checkbox, we get a "memory could
not be written error" and MS Word shuts down. Suspecting Normal.dot
corruption, I started over with a new stock Normal.dot and copied in my
custom code. Still have the problem. Please advise.
