What do you do if a PM goes on vacation...

T

Tara

.... without accepting changes their resources have
submitted for tasks? We use our Project 2002 task
information to run our timesheets. If a PM goes on
vacation without accepting changes from a resource, the
resource can't run his / her complete timesheet. Is there
a way for someone else (the resource's manager or the PM's
manager or even the MS Project administrator) to go in and
accept resources' changes? Thank you for any help at all!!

Tara:

The most expedient way to do this:

Get your IT team to reset the PM's Windows logon password
Logon as that user and update the plan
Get your IT team to reset the PM's Windows logon password again forcing the
user to change it on the next logon.

OK... what are the non-expedient ways to do it?

We have 350 people and 12 domains (all controlled by
different people). Someone is always going to be out and
I'm not going to have the option of resetting their NT
passwords.

Thanks for your help!

Hello,

You could just make the temporary PM a project owner. If this person still
cannot update the tasks, they will need to take ownership of those tasks.
They do this by doing the following...

1) Run MSP Client and opening the project schedule in question.
2) Select only those tasks that require updating.
3) Go to the "Collaborate->Publish->Republish Assignments" menu item.
4) Choose the "Selected Items" drop-down and click "Become the manager for
these assignments" checkbox.
5) Update the tasks.
6) Make sure the Temp PM documents these changes and the Real PM
re-establishes ownership upon arrival.
7) Give schedule ownership back to the Real PM and have the PM follow the
above 'Repuslih Assignments' feature and take ownership.

Alas, updates already sent, but not accepted, are not affected by any
publish or republish events. By the way, unless there's a fix available, all
republish actions are processed as "become the manager" transactions whether
you select this option or not.

Tara:

The nonexpedient method is to create a SQL routine that reassigns the update
records directly in the database.
