what does detect and repair do?

what does detect and repair do in office? Does it just
check file extensions and dll libaries to make sure that
they are correctly mapped in the system? I run them when
i get a fatel application error but it does not fix the
issues. I then have to reinstall office to get it to work
again. Anybody know whats going on with it??

Nope, we have no clue, nor do we have error messages, the version of Office
you are using, what other software you have installed (anti-virus, etc.)
that affects Office, nor what application this happens in. Unfortunately,
the crystal ball is taking a long weekend.
