What does Microsoft have against Verizon?

My apology in advance if this is the wrong new group.

I run Office 2007 (Home & Student). Recently Microsoft offered an
update which required that I enroll on Windows Live. I decided to do
so. BTW, my ISP is verizon.net.

As part of the process, you are asked to enter your e-mail address. So I
did so. This caused the following message:

The portion of your e-mail address that follows the @ symbol is part
of a "reserved domain" such as live.com, hotmail.com, msn.com or
passport.com. Please type a different e-mail address.

I have several e-mail addresses but all are on verizon.net which means
that I cannot enroll.

Could someone explain what a "reserved domain" is and why it's so bad?

Nothing against Verizon. The enroll process is looking for a email address
with one of those user domains such as (e-mail address removed). There are some
Microsoft sites where you need a email address with one of those reserved
domains to access.

What Microsoft wants you to do is signup at one of those domains. Any one
will do.

I recall getting that question and needing to use my hotmail address to
signup for Microsoft newsletters. After signup, I change the email address
for the newsletter to my regular address {easy process}.

Suspect the update you are having problem with is related to Microsoft
Office Live {online}. Since I do not plan to use Microsoft Live, I marked
the update to hide.

If you do not plan to use Microsoft Live, you may want to just hide the
update. Else, you need to signup for Hotmail, Passport etc to get an
address that you can use.
