what does selection locked mean?

I'm trying to edit word documents but a message in the bottom left pane says
'Selection Locked'. Does anyone know how this has happened and how I unlock?

Word 2007? The trial period has now finished or you have failed to activate
the application.
Unlock by activating (should that be applicable) or by purchasing the
product.
