What does the full version of entourage get me?

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: imap

I have Office 2008 student addition and am setting up Entourage via iMap to my company's exchange server. Practically speaking, what does (if anything) upgrading to the full version of Office get me? That is, in what ways is entourage easier/better with their Exchange integration, versus the home/student using iMap?

IMAP only gives you access to e-mail, whereas an Exchange-compatible client
also gives you access to calendars and contacts on Exchange. You can also
subscribe to public folders, assign delegates and so on. Note that if your
company uses a very recent version of Exchange 2007, you can also, after
installing the Standard edition, download Entourage 2008 Web Services
Edition, which gives you access to even more features in Exchange, such as
task and category synching.

This list is not exhaustive, as I am no expert on Exchange; other users may
be able to point out further differences.

Thank you for the reply. My main issue (and it is probably from ignorance more than anything) is how the folders on the server are displayed. I had to manually "subscribe" to each server folder to see it in Entourage. Is the behavior the same in the full edition?

I only use the calender and e-mail in Outlook/Exchange. Although I also do look at other people's calendars. Can I see other people's calendars via IMap, and if not, would the new, full exchange give me that capability?

This is not a behavior of an Exchange client. Once you install Entourage as
an Exchange client you will get all the folders automatically. Regarding
your calendaring question NO you cannot access other user's calendar using
IMAP but Exchange has this capability.

Hope I answered all your questions.

thanks,
Pawan

Yes I think this answers my question. I can only do imap now because I have the home edition. But you are saying that I could use Entourage as a full exchange client -- including seeing other people's calendars -- if I upgrade.

This gives me two other questions:
1) I am finding conflicting information about the ability to purchase the upgrade version for moving from home/student to standard (or business). Some resources say it's possible, some say it's not. How do I find out for sure?

2) This still leaves me with the issue of getting all my archived mail (in a pst) over to Entourage. I am trying o2m and convertmyemail, but have not had success with either yet. Is there another way to get pst to entourage with the standard version of office?

Hi,

see inline for answers.
1) I am finding conflicting information about the ability to purchase the
upgrade version for moving from home/student to standard (or business). Some
resources say it's possible, some say it's not. How do I find out for sure?

It is *not* possible to use the Upgrade version to go from Microsoft Office
2008 Home & Student to the Standard, Special Media or Business editions. The
Upgrade version only works with an *earlier* version of Microsoft Office,
i.e. anything from Microsoft Office 98 to Microsoft Office 2004. Note that
the Student and Teacher edition of earlier versions of Microsoft Office does
not qualify for the Upgrade version.

That is what we MVPs have been told by a contact at the Macintosh Business
Unit at Microsoft, so I assume this answer is very authoritative.
2) This still leaves me with the issue of getting all my archived mail (in a
pst) over to Entourage. I am trying o2m and convertmyemail, but have not had
success with either yet. Is there another way to get pst to entourage with the
standard version of office?

Moving from Outlook to Entourage is generally a very painful experience. See
if some of the strategies mentioned on this page work:

By the way, once you use the Standard edition of Entourage 2008, you can
simply use Entourage to connect to the Exchange server; in that case, there
is no need to try to import PST files, as Entourage and Outlook connect to
the same data on the server.
