What firewall works

LuLu

I am wanting to get a better Firewall than Windows XP to have on PC. But,
when I had CA firewall 2007 installed it would not publish. Can anyone tell
me what one they use and if it is secure?

Yes, I have uninstalled CA Firewall but I am using the rest of their suite.
The site publishes OK NOW.

I have FP 2003, Windows XP SP2 with all updates

If you are using a router you do not need a firewall. Adding one in
software only drags your CPU down.

I do like some of the nags because some programs will connect to internet
upon start up and I like the ability to stop that with going between cable
and dial up so I do not slow PC down

One of your best bets though is to make use of a router as a physical layer
to protect your computer. Firewall programs are great, but they are just
programs running within the OS. That makes them potentially vulerable to
certain attacks, more so than if you were using a hardware-based solution
that is, essentially, hard-wired into a physical device. Things like NAT
(Network Address Translation) that give out IP addresses such as
192.168.1.1, can't be browsed outside your network as they aren't part of a
routable address block and help prevent people from directly browsing to
your computer. They could try browsing to the router, but with NAT they
wouldn't have a way to browse directly to the computer.

Ok I am not at home to see how my router is set up. Could one of you tell me
how to check and then enable NAT for my Linksys wireless router.

Thanks

It should be automatically set if you are using the factory default setting.

If not visit the Linksys site as they have fairly good configuration documentation.
