What function does Markup have in WORD?

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Power PC I have a document laid out in WORD with my required page size and margin sizes and my text divided into chapters that start on odd numbered pages and then I save all that and close the document.

But then when I open it the following day or whenever, the document's right hand margin goes bigger by default on the screen even though all my chapters and page numbers etc stay correctly positioned and the Page Size still shows the correct size in Page Setup - the difference is that I now have a screen page that has a wide empty space on the right hand side and the paper actually extends past the end of the ruler on the right hand side on the screen. I have to reduce from 150% to 100% to get all the paper in the viewing panel. Overall, the screen page seems like it is about 50% bigger than the Page Size, the extra bit is empty and the Page Size in Page Setup is still reading the correct size.

When it's like that - if I go to View > Markup and disable Markup the document reverts to the correct size on the screen.

So what is Markup and what does it do and why does my document open with Markup enabled when I save it with Markup disabled every time I close the document?

View> Markup being active is the default for all documents. However, the
space on the right unless Track Changes and/or Comments have been used & the
Preference is set for "Use balloons to display changes". You can turn the
Markup off then make some sort of change in the file before saving/closing
the setting should be retained when you next open the file. However, if you
turn Track Changes of/on or insert a new Comment the Markup will be
displayed again automatically. It's a 'security/privacy' feature intended to
help avoid forwarding of documents that contain changes or comments that
might present a problem if disclosed to the recipient or other user.

If you turn Track Changes OFF then Accept/Reject all changes & delete the
Comments the extra width will go away.
