What graphics format should I use?

I am writing a user manual for a software program using Word 97. The
manual will be printed on a black & white laser printer.

I want to insert screen shots of menus, etc, but I don't know what
graphics format is best to use. I use Paint Shop Pro v7 to save the
files.

What graphic format should I use?

For one version of the manual I resize the images to about 1/2 their
original size. Does this effect the choice of the format?

Re-sizing -- is it best to do it in Word or in PSP7?
