What happened to my Word, PowerPoint, Excel and ? programs

G

Georgew6

I was having problems with my Outlook program (I messed up the columns and
could not see all the the message subject in list of INBOX mail). I decided
to download the newer Office 2003 Standard. This may have been a bad mistake.
I now have Outlook, but the other programs that were to download are no
longer on my computer. Neither the ones I had before, nor the new 2003
versions.

I found this out when I went to write an email in Outlook and got error
message saying I did not have Word [for various reasons]. Looking on the
Programs Directory, Start Menu and Desktop, I can't find Word, nor any of the
other programs that should have downloaded with Office Standard 2003.

One concern I now have is that apparently I have Office XP Professional (I
believe I ordered this, but never gave much thought to what it was named).
Now, with downloading the new Office 2003 STANDARD is it possible that I made
a serious mistake and have to reinstall all my other applications that seem
to be missing? The Office 2003 XP Professional is only available on CD by
mail and is much more expensive than the Standard with not many new things
that I would use.

Microsoft does not provide free support to this trial version even though I
feel it should since downloading such a large program can lead to problems.
Nevertheless, I have to do something.

Please, if someone is sure of the what is happening in this situation and
what I should/can do, I do need your help. Thank you in advance.

Uninstall the Office trial version (2003 Standard) and reinstall your Office
XP Professional. You may need to do a detect and repair for Office XP.

I finally did find the Office XP 2003 Standard versions of Outlook, Word,
Access, Excel. I have not tried each at this time. Outlook is a better
version and I hope that the other applications are, as well. The problem I
encountered was due to the downloaded files being spread around in the
....Programs directory, while before I was able to see them at a glance. Also,
I did not see them when I went to Control and look at the programs that came
up in the Uninstall window. Other programs were there, but I sure did not see
any of these Office 2003 programs.

I have been messing around trying to get them back together in one place. I
used Powepoint to view a presentation someone sent me as an attachment to an
Outlook message. That worked, although now my Desktop Shortcut that I made is
not opening the PowerPoint program. I guess I did not have the correct file
when I made the Shortcut.

How many more problems I will have with the files for the programs remains
to be seen. Do you know if I am allowed to delete the Office 2003 and then
reinstall the update? I wonder if Microsoft's downloading program will
accept my downloading two and if this will give me a cleaner download
experience? Do you feel this is a useful option for me now?

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I see I am in two threads, so I will stick
with this one. I didn't realize they were connected. sorry.

After furious head scratching, Georgew6 asked:

| I was having problems with my Outlook program (I messed up the
| columns and could not see all the the message subject in list of
| INBOX mail). I decided to download the newer Office 2003 Standard.
| This may have been a bad mistake. I now have Outlook, but the other
| programs that were to download are no longer on my computer. Neither
| the ones I had before, nor the new 2003 versions.
|
| I found this out when I went to write an email in Outlook and got
| error message saying I did not have Word [for various reasons].
| Looking on the Programs Directory, Start Menu and Desktop, I can't
| find Word, nor any of the other programs that should have downloaded
| with Office Standard 2003.
|
| One concern I now have is that apparently I have Office XP
| Professional (I believe I ordered this, but never gave much thought
| to what it was named). Now, with downloading the new Office 2003
| STANDARD is it possible that I made a serious mistake and have to
| reinstall all my other applications that seem to be missing? The
| Office 2003 XP Professional is only available on CD by mail and is
| much more expensive than the Standard with not many new things that I
| would use.
|
| Microsoft does not provide free support to this trial version even
| though I feel it should since downloading such a large program can
| lead to problems. Nevertheless, I have to do something.
|
| Please, if someone is sure of the what is happening in this situation
| and what I should/can do, I do need your help. Thank you in advance.

I didn't realize they were connected. sorry.
