What happened to Undo in Word 2004?

Having recently upgraded to Word 2004 I have run into a weirdness I
could use someone's input on.

Like most fallible people, the "undo" command in Word has always been
my panic button.

Yet I now find that the reliable "Command Z" now performs "repeat
typing". Its previous function has been replaced by "Command Y".

Is this possible?

Even the Help file says

command+Z Undo an action
command+Y Redo or repeat an action

Even if I go to Tools>Customize keyboard and try to reset "edit undo"
to Command Z and "edit redo" to Command Y, the system won't accept it.

Either Word 2004 has not read its own Help file or the software has
entered into the Twilight Zone.

I vote for the twilight zone, since the default keyboard shortcuts are
still CMD-z for EditUndo and CMD-y for the EditRedoRepeat command.

In your Customize Keyboard dialog, are you saving the changes in Normal
(dropdown, lower left) or in the appropriate document template?

Have you tried clicking Reset All in the Tools/Customize/Customize
Keyboard?
