What happens to linked files...

....when the machine is not connected to the network.

I was asked this question and I don't know the answer,
nor do I have the ability to find out in my network
environment. The question is, if a database is created on
a laptop, and the database contains linked tables which
reside on a server on the network, what happens or what
sort of error message will you get if you are offline,
open the database, and run a query or a report that
depends on a linked table.
