what happens to word documents saved in compatibility mode?

Please don't SHOUT. It is unnecessary as well as being more difficult to
read.

If the document was attached to an email and you edited and saved it BEFORE
saving it to your local HDD, you will find it only exists as a temporary
file somewhere on your PC in the Temporary Internet Folder. You could try
searching the folder using advanced search and restricting to the
approximate date/time you saved the document.

Lesson: always save to your local HDD before editing a document.
