What has happened to many of my fonts

V

Vixfoxwatch

I use WindowsXP and up until lately I have had ALL fonts available in Word.
Suddenly I discover half of them have disappeared. Where are the fonts 1 -
100, etc., where is Lashen Tov, Dear Teacher and more, fonts I used so often?
I have checked in my fonts folder of the programme file and they have simply
gone. None of them has been deleted by me. Has Microsoft downloaded a
'fonts deleting' update? I can't understand what has happened. I have a
full AVG anti-virus programme and my ISP also runs MacAfee. Please, can
anyone help restore the fonts which are necessary to me?

You need to check in Windows Control Panel | Fonts for your font files. Are
they there?

If so, then the next step is to make sure you have a printer driver
installed and set as the default printer. Word needs this in order to show
the available fonts.

In case you need them, here are instructions for installing a printer
driver:

Dear Echo, thank you so much for replying so quickly. I have already
checked that fonts are installed BUT the missing fonts I had previously have
all disappeared - only those currently available are there. Also, I have my
printer driver (Epson C66) soundly installed already. Can you suggest
anything else or take me on to another step, please? VERY many thanks,

Is that printer selected as your default printer?

If your fonts are missing from Windows Explorer, your only option is to
reinstall them. Windows does not uninstall fonts. Have you made changes to
your system? Has anyone else been using your computer?

Cool, thanks for clarifying. I figured maybe your fonts were in a system
folder you couldn't see or otherwise hidden.

So I'm with JoAnn -- you'll need to reinstall your fonts. And, as she
mentioned, Windows doesn't uninstall fonts, so you'll want to start thinking
about what you've changed on your system lately.

Bless you both for coming back again and so quickly (it's 02.52 hours here)!
You've been so helpful and also put to bed the horrible notion I had that
something like unistall had been working behind the scenes. If I put in my
original installation disc will that be OK or do I have to uninstall first -
I hope not? My dears, it's time for bed now so if you again reply, I'll
catch up with your answers tomorrow if I may. From a miserable, wet and
windy area of the UK - Goodnight and God bless. Vixfoxwatch

You can do a custom install -- put in your Office CD and choose Repair or
Custom install, whichever option you have. Then go through the list of all
the stuff that will be installed and look for anything that mentions
templates or fonts. (I know some fonts were only installed when you install
the extra PowerPoint presentation designs, for example.)

Alternatively, go to Windows Control Panel | Fonts and choose File | Install
New Font. Navigate to the CD and then go through the folders to see if you
have any font files that can be installed. Thing is, I'm not sure the fonts
will be loose on the CD like that -- they're probably buried in the *.CAB
files on the CD. But if you have font files elsewhere on your computer, you
can follow this general procedure to install them.

Hi Vixfoxwatch,

If I understand correctly the fonts that are missing in Word are also missing when you check in the Fonts section of the Windows
Control panel, that these are Truetype fonts, and that they remain missing when you choose a Truetype capable printer in Word in
File=>Print?

If so, then, no using the *Office* installation disc may not help in this case. None of the fonts you listed in your original post
are from MS Office.

It's possible that the font cache that Windows maintains has been damaged. If so, it can cause, among other things, installed fonts
to not be listed.
To check locate and recycle
C:\Windows\System32\FNTCACHE.DAT
then restart the PC. Windows will create a new cache for you.

You didn't mention the version of Word you're using, or how many fonts you have loaded.
