What have they done (2008) to the page numbering in headers andfooters???

It was so very easy in 2004. You had two little icons in the header and
footer dialogs. You clicked, and you got a page number inserted as a
character that could be formatted and placed like any other character or
paragraph.

Now some blanketyblankblank blank has decided that gave us too much control.
Page numbers are now inserted as ³frames.² I thought ³frames² went out in
disgrace 5 years ago. But now we get them back for page numbering?

Please tell me I am missing something and that I can still insert page
numbers as characters into my header or footer text?

Best,

Actually, if you used the Insert | Page Number dialog, they were always
inserted as frames. But if you viewed header/footer and then clicked the
Page Number button on the header/footer toolbar, it wasn't inserted as a
frame. (classic Word, roll-eyes)

There is no longer a header/footer toolbar--it's been replaced by
activating the appropriate panel in the Formatting Palette (sucks for
me, since I hate the FP and keep it closed). But clicking the Page
Number button in the FP still gives me no frame.

You can also use Insert | AutoText after getting into header/footer--it
will automatically show appropriate header/footer options, including
some page ones--without frames.

I did find a workaround, but I forgot it almost immediately. I have sort of
given up and keep the formatting palette open most of the time. Probably
like you, I¹m a touch typist and hate having to remove fingers from a
keyboard, grab a mouse, twiddle with it to click something, and then go back
to typing.

Only think I hate more is doing the writing I¹m supposed to be doing rather
than complaining about software. :)
