What is a "file error"?

I keep getting this when trying to save a Word 2007 document with a SmartArt
table in it. It won't let me save the document with SmartArt in it at all.

The usual cause of such a file error is that the user does not have
permissions to create files on the destination folder or drive. Can you save
a word document to the same location if it does not contain a SmartArt
table?

Hi Tom,

i'm having exactly the same issue here.

When saving a word or ppt document without smartart all goes wel. When saving the document with some form of smartart in it you get the error 'a file error has occurred' and that's it.

I haver reinstalled Office but to no avail...

On different sites on the internet people are experiencing the same issues but no one has a solution unfortunately, do you? :)

Regards
Joost

Are you saving the document as a docx type? Do you have SmartArt in the
Headers or Footers?

Hi,

I've just encountered the very same problem.

I'm using Office 2007 on Vista 32-bit. Ran Windows Update about half an hour
ago in hope to fix this error. I'm using the system's Administrator account
(hidden by default) and I have no problems writing Office files to disk.

It occurs when there is any sort of SmartArt object in the document or
powerpoint. The files I experimented with are fresh copies with one unedited
SmartArt newly inserted and saved.

In Word, it says "A file error has occurred." and states the path of the file.

In Powerpoint, it says "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened." upon
clicking on Save or Save As. It then marks the file as Read-Only and asks to
save as another file name upon closing the document. The same error cycles
even if saved under a different name.

I am having the same issue. I've done all the updates, run repair on
Office.

If I insert SmartArt in any Office 2007 program, I cannot save the
file. The status bar says it is saving, but then it pops another save
as dialog box up. If I do nothing, it does nothing. If I hit save
again at this point, I get the message There was an error saving the
file with the path to the document. I am only saving in docx format.
The interesting thing is, when it pops the second save as box, it
increments the file name (if it was Doc1.docx then when the second
Save as box pops up, it has Doc2.docx as file name.) Actually it does
save a file, but it is a blank file if it was a new one I created. If
I had opened a file, and done a Save as, it will save it as it was
originally.

I did try to see what would happen if I did try to save in the earlier
format. In that case, it brought up the compatibility dialog box. Then
behaved exactly the same as above.

This happens if I open a file that already has SmartArt in it and try
to resave, or if I create a new document and insert SmartArt.

I know it's a rather old topic but did anyone find out how to solve this?
