Hi Mark,

With Office 2000 you could get that error if you're using
a damaged or dirty CD
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;302399&FR=1
or if you're installing from a CD-RW or DVD drive rather than
a CD-ROM drive.
