What is expected from an Atom compliant blog provider?

I have a custom blogging service that supports Atom and am trying to connect
to it using Word 2007. It fails to register my account. It would be a great
help if someone lays out the protocol conversation between Word 2007 and an
Atom blog provider. Currently, this is a total mystery to me (and more others
like me).
