What is it that causes the cursor to go into a half-high mode?

Half high mode? do you mean it's smaller or that it will only go halfway up
your screen or it kinda has a buzz?

It means that the cursor is about half the height that it should be. I
started noticing this would randomly happen only after I got Word 2003.
It was really annoying.

I have my default zoom set at 150%, which might be the problem. If I
change my zoom to 100%, then the cursor is fine. (Actually, the cursor
doesn't change, but the font gets smaller to match!) And then if I
change back to 150% zoom, the cursor is fine now. Seems like a bug to
me. What's your default zoom set at?

Depends on which system I'm working at. I generally prefer Print View so
it's anywhere from 88% to 114%. I tend to set if back from the higher
numbers. I use a 19" monitor so anything over 100% is HUGE to me.

Bucky knows what I'm talking about. The cursor ceases extending about
10% higher and 10% lower than a capital letter. I the "half height"
mode it stands up to midway of a letter. The top half is lost.

It has nothing to do with the View or Zoom, but it is unique to the
document; that is, it happens in some of my Word documents but not all.
