What is Mac OS X Speech and is it a dictation device?

I

ibeecat

I'm running OS X and can't find the options recommended by MS to find
out more (i.e., Languages/voice dictation/microphone). Overwhelmed
here. None of it's in HELP, either. Do I have to buy a separate
software? What about microphone recommendations?

Tnx in advance.

Hi,

In Word, the Speech toolbar will let you have Word speak selected text.

In Word 2004 the new notebook view has the ability to record sounds
(speech included), but it is not a speech-to-text tool.

For speech-to-text there is a limited set of commands available in
MacOS. These are designed primarily to help people with disabilities
navigate the menus and have alternative ways to move the mouse. For
text-to-speech transcription like an old fashioned secretary you need
IBM's excellent ViaVoice program.

But how do you use the SPEECH CANVAS? I can find no documentation at on
that topic.

Jim - how do you use the SPEECH CANVAS in Word for Mac 2004? I cannot
find any documentation for this at all.
